Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
